LOVE + COURAGE
This period of focused isolation and daily reminders of our own mortality has created within me a sense of urgency to connect with my parents, who immigrated to the US from Uruguay when I was six years old. I found myself wanting to know more about their stories, motivations, dreams and fears. What borders they broke, why, and at what cost. I began to ask questions and listen closely, sitting with each of them one on one in my studio for hours.
I’d then paint with their stories in my ears and in my heart.
And I found something surprising – a fuller and more rich understanding of who they really are — not from the perspective of a young child, but as a woman, an artist, finally and truly seeing them fully.
This is something new for me. Not only is the subject matter deeply personal, but I've also created a short film to accompany the work that I invite you to watch.
The paintings and film are part of CAMPO Artfest, a beautiful festival in my home country, Uruguay. Thank you to Heidi Lender, Founder of CampoAir, for your vision, passion and trust. I can’t wait to visit in person again.
